Lohagara AL leader arrested over July violence case

Police have arrested Ali Ahmad, general secretary of the Awami League’s Adhunagar union unit in Lohagara upazila of Chattogram, in a case filed over attacks on students during the July
uprising.

Police arrested him from the Harina area of Adhunagar on Saturday (September 19) evening.

Police and local sources said Ali Ahmad is named as an accused in several cases related to the violence and killings during the July movement. He has also been accused of involvement in alleged provocative activities surrounding former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s return to Bangladesh, as well as planning Awami League processions, meetings and clandestine gatherings in Adhunagar.

Lohagara Police Station OC Md Abdullah said Ali Ahmad was arrested in a case filed with the police station over attacks on students during the July movement.

“He is an accused in the case and was arrested accordingly,” the OC added.

Police said Ali Ahmad was being held in custody following his arrest and would be produced before a court today. Further legal action will be taken after reviewing the cases and allegations against him.
