Ed Sheeran to perform solo after tour acts exit over Gaza outcry

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is scheduled to return to the stage on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, likely performing without supporting acts after his entire roster of opening performers withdrew from his world tour.

According to a report by Aljazeera, the widespread boycott follows the removal of American rapper Macklemore from Sheeran’s United States tour line-up after Macklemore made pro-Palestinian remarks on stage during a concert in New Jersey on September 5.

The decision to drop Macklemore, reportedly influenced by pro-Israel billionaire Robert Kraft, triggered swift backlash across the music industry. Artist and producer Finneas, Danish pop band Lukas Graham, and Irish singer Aaron Rowe subsequently canceled their scheduled appearances on the tour in solidarity with Macklemore and Gaza.

In response to the controversy, Palestinian rights advocates and the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) issued calls for a global boycott of Sheeran's entire tour, including upcoming dates in Latin America and Europe. A pro-Palestinian protest rally is scheduled to take place near the concert venue prior to Saturday’s performance.

In Gaza City, Palestinian artists painted a mural honoring Macklemore amidst rubble, expressing gratitude for his public advocacy.

Addressing the fallout, Sheeran released a statement denying direct responsibility for Macklemore’s removal and asserting that he is not complicit in suppressing expression.
