Shahjalal shrine donation boxes yield Tk 8.89 million, gold and foreign currency

A total of Tk 8,892,966 has been collected from the sealed historic donation urn and newly installed donation boxes at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet, along with gold jewellery and currencies from several countries.


The money counting began at around 9:00 AM on Saturday (September 19) in the presence of district administration officials and ended around 6pm, said Sylhet City Corporation Administrator and shrine committee member Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury.


He said, "the donation boxes contained 1 bhori 9 ana 2 rati of gold jewellery, in addition to Bangladeshi currency. Foreign currencies included British £5, Indian Rs 3,954, Thai 5 baht, Saudi 99.25 riyals, Malaysian 29 ringgits, US $8, Omani 903 riyals, UAE 57.25 dirhams, Iraqi 1 dinar, Qatari 21.50 riyals, €30.10, Bahraini 0.25 dinar, Papua New Guinean 50 kina, Chinese 15 yuan and Indonesian 5,000 rupiah.


Qayyum also said six cows and 111 goats had previously been donated to the shrine. Of them, five cows and 70 goats were slaughtered for the shrine's langar khana. Another 40 goats were sold to pay the wages of langar khana workers, while one cow and one goat were donated for the weddings of two impoverished women.


The donation urn and boxes were opened around 9:00 AM in the presence of Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun. The money and other donated items were then counted publicly.


Several letters and gold ornaments were also found. Madrasa students counted the money in the presence of magistrates from the district administration, police and Ansar members.


The counting was conducted under the supervision of a 13-member committee formed to ensure transparency in the management of the shrine's income and expenditure. After the counting, the money will be deposited into an account opened in the shrine's name at Sonali Bank through the district administration.


In the first three rounds, Tk 17,65,549 was collected on June 22, Tk 47,10,153 on July 11 and Tk 70,88,672 on August 15.


According to the district administration, a total of Tk 1,40,64,374 was collected in the previous three rounds. With Saturday's collection, the total amount collected over four rounds stands at Tk 2,29,57,340.


A 13-member committee was formed on June 26 to bring transparency to the management of donations at the shrine. Since then, the donated money has been counted publicly at regular intervals.
