A Bangladeshi citizen can leave the country at any time and can also return whenever they wish, BNP lawmaker Barrister Rumeen Farhana has said.

She made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists about the possible return of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been convicted in a case involving crimes against humanity during the July uprising.

“It is clearly stated in the Constitution. What steps the government will take after a person enters Bangladesh are up to the government,” she said.

Farhana made the comments around 5:15 PM on Friday after attending a reception for meritorious students at the Ashuganj Upazila Parishad auditorium in Brahmanbaria. The programme was organised by the Ashuganj Abdul Qadir Shah Library.

Recently, the Ashuganj upazila unit of BNP staged a broom procession protesting remarks made by Farhana in Parliament criticising the BNP government. The group also warned that she would be declared unwelcome in Ashuganj unless she withdrew her remarks.

Responding to the issue, Farhana said differences of opinion were normal in politics.

“That happens in politics. It is nothing. There will be differences of opinion, and someone may be declared unwelcome. There will be processions and rallies-that is politics. So, all of these are normal,” she said.
