North Korea warns US as military tensions escalate

North Korea has warned the United States that it could respond with stronger and potentially more offensive measures if US-led military activities threaten its security or national interests.

Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, issued the warning in a statement carried by state media KCNA on Friday (September 18). She accused Washington of worsening tensions on the Korean Peninsula through multinational military exercises.

Kim specifically criticised the Pacific Vanguard 2026 naval exercise near Guam, which involved the United States, South Korea, Japan, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. She described the exercise as a threatening US-led “war game” aimed at expanding Washington’s military influence in the Asia-Pacific.

She warned that North Korea’s response could be “proportional or more offensive” if its sovereignty, security or national interests were seriously threatened.

Kim also reaffirmed Pyongyang’s policy of strengthening its nuclear deterrent, saying there would be no change in that course. She warned that North Korea’s armed forces could mobilise “all means available” in response to perceived threats.

The statement came a day after Kim rejected international calls for North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons programme, reiterating Pyongyang’s position that its status as a nuclear weapons state is irreversible.

North Korean Vice Defence Minister Kim Kang Il separately said the growing military cooperation among the US, South Korea and Japan justified Pyongyang’s continued expansion of its nuclear arsenal.
