A freedom fighter was stabbed to death in the Char Harikesh area of Kurigram municipal town on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Rostom Ali Tota, 80, a resident of the area.
Police arrested a man named Jalil in connection with the incident after local residents detained him and handed him over to police.
The incident occurred around 9:00 AM on Friday, police said.
According to locals, Rostom Ali was standing by the roadside after having tea in the morning when Jalil suddenly stabbed him, allegedly without any prior dispute or provocation.
Locals tried to rescue him after he sustained serious injuries, but he died at the scene. Later, angry residents detained the accused and handed him over to police.
Residents alleged that drug use has increased in the Char Harikesh area over the years, contributing to a rise in crimes including theft and snatching. They demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible for the killing and intensified anti-drug drives in the area.
Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kurigram Sadar Police Station, said the accused had been detained and that a case was being processed in connection with the incident.
