India warns B'desh as 101 bilateral pacts face review

India has said it will take necessary measures to protect its interests after reports that Bangladesh is reviewing 101 agreements and memorandums of understanding signed with India during the Awami League government.

Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made the remarks at the ministry’s weekly briefing in New Delhi on Friday in response to a question about the review.

“We have seen some media reports on this. But nothing has been conveyed to us officially so far. Naturally, India will take all necessary measures to protect its own interests,” Jaiswal said.

Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said on September 11 that the government was reviewing 101 agreements and MoUs signed with India during the previous government. He said the outcome of the review would be announced soon.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir later said the agreements and MoUs were being examined and reviewed through the parliamentary process.

The review includes agreements related to bilateral cooperation, including arrangements concerning the use of Chattogram and Mongla ports, according to reports.

Asked about the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, which is due to expire in December 2026, Jaiswal said the Joint Rivers Commission mechanism was in place for discussions on water-related bilateral issues. He said technical-level meetings on water issues were being held regularly.
