Snap is promoting its $2,200 smart glasses, Specs, with new artificial intelligence (AI), entertainment and business features.
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel announced the new features at an event in Los Angeles. The company wants Specs to be used not only as smart glasses but also as part of users’ daily digital activities.
One of the main new features is Specs Intelligence, an AI system that can connect with devices and apps to understand users’ tasks, priorities and daily habits.
Specs will also support HBO Max and Spotify, allowing users to access video and music through the glasses.
For businesses, Snap has launched Specs for Enterprise, which can connect the glasses with workplace systems. The company said it is working with Amazon, Salesforce and Nvidia on the initiative.
Snap is also adding an AR feature developed with the NBA and WNBA to help users practice basketball and improve their shots.
The company has also announced a cellular connectivity package for using Specs outside Wi-Fi areas. The package will include a charging case with built-in cellular connectivity and will cost Verizon customers $10 a month and others $20.
Priced at $2,200, it remains unclear how widely the glasses will be adopted by consumers. Snap plans to open a temporary Specs showroom and sales center in Los Angeles in October and begin wider shipments later in the fall.
