Two arrested over gunfire on expressway

Two people have been arrested over allegations that two shots were fired at pedestrians following an argument over parking beside the Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway in Faridpur.

The arrested are Md Hamidul Gazi, 42, who allegedly fired the shots, and Fatema Islam Eni, 26, who was travelling with him in the car.

Special Response Battalion (SRB)-1 identified and arrested them at the Imperial Swiss Garden Hotel in Banani late Tuesday night, following an investigation into the incident.

SRB-1 Commander Lt Col Md Neyamul Halim Khan disclosed the information at a press conference at the unit's Uttara office in Dhaka on Wednesday.

He said Hamidul left Dhaka for Gopalganj with Fatema in a maroon private car on the night of August 17.

They stopped beside the Bhanga Expressway to buy betel leaves, when an argument broke out with several locals over parking.

At one point, Hamidul allegedly took an illegal pistol from inside the car and fired two shots to intimidate the pedestrians before driving towards Gopalganj.

A case was filed with Bhanga Police Station over the incident. SRB-1 later identified the suspects based on preliminary verification and intelligence information.

The commander said the private car used in the incident was recovered from a garage based on information provided by the arrested individuals.

The pistol allegedly used in the shooting has not yet been recovered. An operation is under way to locate it.

The arrested individuals and the recovered car were later handed over to Airport Police Station for legal action, the SRB commander said.
