A court has ordered the seizure of two flats and other immovable assets worth Tk 49.61 lakh belonging to former Janata Bank chairman Prof Abul Barkat, while his car and bank accounts have also been frozen.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Shahjahan Kabir passed the order on Wednesday following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The seized assets include Tk 2.5 lakh invested in the Dhaka University Teachers' Housing Project and two separate flats in Mohammadpur and Dhanmondi.
A car worth Tk 29 lakh and money in his bank accounts have also been frozen.
ACC Assistant Director and investigation officer Mohammad Shahjahan Miraj filed the application. He said an investigation was underway into allegations that Barkat had unlawfully provided loans to various companies and acquired assets beyond his known sources of income.
According to the application, the investigation found immovable assets worth Tk 49,61,384 and movable assets worth Tk 3.50 crore and US$10,250 in Barkat's name.
Information from various sources suggested that he was attempting to sell or transfer the assets, the application said.
The ACC said transferring, converting or selling the alleged illicit assets before the allegations were resolved could cause significant loss to the state.
It said the assets therefore needed to be seized and frozen immediately under Section 14 of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012 and Rule 18 of the Anti-Corruption Commission Rules, 2007.
Barkat was arrested from his Dhanmondi residence on July 10, 2025, in an ACC case. After securing bail in that case, he was shown arrested in the case over the killing of businessman Wadud linked to the July movement.
He was later released from jail after obtaining bail in that case.
