Lionel Messi is set to become the owner of Spanish second-division club CD Eldense after completing the formal process to acquire 100 per cent of its shares, according to Spanish media reports.

The Argentina star has bought the shares from Colombian investment firm TH Solutions Group, which previously owned the club. However, the deal still requires approval from Spain’s Higher Sports Council (CSD) before it can be officially completed.

Reports earlier this month said Messi had reached an agreement in principle to take over Eldense. The subsequent audit, legal checks and contractual formalities have now been completed, leaving CSD approval as the final step.

Eldense will become Messi’s second club ownership venture in Spain. In April, he acquired a majority stake in Catalan club UE Cornellà, which plays in the lower divisions.

The takeover comes shortly after Eldense returned to Spain’s second tier. The club secured its first league win of the season against Sporting Gijón, a result Messi celebrated on social media.

Eldense have also recently changed their coaching setup, with Josep Ferrando taking charge on an interim basis after Claudio Barragán stepped down. Xavi Calleja has reportedly been considered for the permanent position, though no appointment has been confirmed.

The prospect of Messi becoming the club’s owner has generated increased interest in Eldense and the city of Elda. Local authorities had previously confirmed the agreement in principle and said they were awaiting completion of the process.
