JnU student's hanging body recovered from mess

A Jagannath University (JnU) student was found hanging in a mess in Dhaka’s Chankharpul area on Tuesday night. 

Deceased Anik Chandra Pal, 21, was a student of the university’s Drawing and Painting Department from the 2023-24 academic session.

He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

According to his roommate and classmate Joy Bhuiyan, Anik had been unusually quiet since Monday. After failing to reach him by phone on Tuesday, a batchmate went to his mess on BK Ganguly Lane and found the door to his room locked from inside.

They eventually broke a window and saw him hanging from the ceiling fan with a cloth around his neck.

Classmates said Anik had recently gone through a breakup and had become withdrawn afterward. His phone was reportedly found switched off and damaged.

However, police said a note recovered from his room referred to his physical health and anxiety over his eyesight. 

Ban­shal police SI Md Rubel Hossain said Anik wrote that he had poor vision and feared he might lose his eyesight in the future.

Police said the circumstances surrounding his death were still being investigated.
