State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir visited actor Azmeri Haque Badhon at her residence on Tuesday evening to inquire about her following an alleged attack in Italy.

Badhon, who recently attended the Venice International Film Festival in Italy, said she and her family came under attack there by individuals she identified as activists of the banned Chhatra League and the Awami League.

In a social media post on Tuesday, Badhon said Humayun Kabir visited her home on behalf of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to check on the wellbeing of her family.

“I am deeply honoured and grateful for his sincerity, courtesy and sense of responsibility.''

Badhon said the government’s decision to stand beside her during a difficult period had reassured her personally and strengthened her confidence in the state as a citizen.

“I believe the greatest strength of a democratic state is its people,” she said, adding that citizens’ trust grows when the state takes responsibility for protecting their safety, dignity and rights.

The actor also expressed gratitude to the Bangladesh government, the government leadership, the Bangladesh Embassy, Italian authorities and police, as well as people at home and abroad who supported her and inquired about her family following the incident.

Reflecting on her experience in Italy, Badhon said it had reinforced her belief that unity, courage and a sense of responsibility towards others are essential in standing against injustice, fear and division.

“Differences of opinion may exist, but there can be no compromise when it comes to a citizen’s safety, dignity and rights,” she said.

Badhon concluded by calling for collective efforts to build a safe, dignified, democratic and humane Bangladesh.
