Eight individuals acquitted in the high-profile Sonagazi Madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case have been released from Kashimpur High Security and Women’s Central Prisons in Gazipur following the processing of their court orders.

Senior Jail Super of Kashimpur High Security Central Prison Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed that seven male prisoners—Md. Shamim, Hafez Abdul Kader, Mohiuddin Shakil, Afsar Uddin, Imran Hossain Mamun, Iftekhar Uddin Rana, and Abdur Rahim Sharif—were released sequentially on Tuesday (September 15) afternoon upon official verification of legal documents.

Simultaneously, Kamrun Nahar Mani was released from Kashimpur Women’s Central Prison alongside her seven-year-old daughter, Mobasshera, who stepped outside a correctional facility for the first time in her life.

Mani was seven months pregnant when she was arrested in 2019 in connection with the burning of Nusrat on a madrasa roof in Sonagazi, Feni, and subsequently gave birth to her child while in custody.

The releases follow an August 24 High Court verdict delivered by a bench comprising Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice K M Rasheduzzaman Raja. The court upheld the death sentences of two individuals, including former principal S M Siraj-ud-Daula and Shahadat Hossain Shamim, while commuting four sentences to life imprisonment and acquitting ten others from the original sixteen sentenced to death by the trial court.

Relatives gathered outside the prison gates to receive the released individuals with flowers. Speaking to reporters outside the facility, Mani described raising her daughter in prison, teaching her academics and religious scriptures, and handcrafting a schoolbag from cloth to prepare her for life outside.
