Baby dies after falling from moving train in India

A nine-month-old baby died after falling from a moving Seemanchal Express while travelling from Delhi to Bihar. The body was recovered from bushes beside the railway tracks nearly 23 hours later.

The incident took place near Faizullahpur station in Uttar Pradesh, according to media reports.

Delhi’s Sitapuri resident Mohan Kumar was travelling to Salouna village in Bihar’s Begusarai district with his wife Kajal and their son. They were in berths 61 and 64 of the train’s S-1 coach after boarding at Anand Vihar.

Police said Kajal was feeding the baby while Mohan went to the toilet. At one point, she fell asleep with the child in her arms. When the train reached near Faizullahpur station, the baby slipped from her lap and fell through an emergency window.

After returning, Mohan and Kajal searched the entire coach after finding that their son was missing.

Realising that the baby had fallen from the train, Mohan tried to pull the emergency chain between Khaga and Sirathu stations. He alleged that passengers and railway staff prevented him from doing so. He later informed the railway police after reaching Prayagraj.

A joint team of police and railway police began searching beside the tracks at night. The baby’s body was later found in bushes near Faizullahpur station.

Police said dense bushes and waterlogging hampered the search.

GRP Superintendent of Police Prashant Kumar said a preliminary investigation suggested that the baby slipped from his mother’s lap and fell through the emergency window. Injuries were also found on the baby’s head.

Mohan said they had lost their child while returning home after three years. After the post-mortem, the parents returned to Delhi with the body instead of travelling to Bihar.
