No special comment on Quader’s death penalty: Dr Zahed

The government has no special comment on the court’s death sentence against banned Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman said on Tuesday.
He said the government’s main concern is not whether it is happy or unhappy about anyone receiving a death sentence, but whether justice is being ensured in society.
The adviser made the remarks while answering questions from journalists at a press conference on the progress of various government activities on Tuesday (September 15).
Asked about the government’s position on the court’s death sentence against the Awami League leader, Zahed said, “Our government has nothing to say. The prosecution team is certainly working on this case.”
He said people should focus on whether justice is being ensured rather than celebrating someone’s death sentence.
“If the accused had been in the country, it would have been better. They could have defended themselves and contested the charges brought against them,” he said.
He added that based on the proceedings, the government believes the accused could receive the highest punishment.
The government welcomes such punishments, he said, but they should not be linked to revenge.
“We want to ensure justice in our society. In the Proclamation of Independence, we promised equality, human dignity and social justice. We want to see whether those principles are being ensured,” Zahed said.
