A 35-year-old professional driver was shot inside a residence in the capital's Badda area on Saturday night, suffering a bullet wound to his right leg above the knee.
The victim, identified as Md. Rana, was subsequently admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition.
The incident occurred around 10:00 PM on Saturday (September 12) inside house number 373 in the Moinarbagh Boubazar area, located behind Hossain Market under Badda Police Station, according to the victim and his relatives.
Rana, son of the late Abdur Rob, resides in the Kazibari area of Notoun Bazar under Vatara Police Station, with his permanent family residence in Maijdee, Noakhali.
Speaking from his hospital bed at DMCH, Rana stated that he had visited his brother Joy’s residence in North Badda on Saturday afternoon. He was resting in a room alongside Joy and another younger brother when someone knocked on the door around 10:00 PM.
After receiving no answer when calling out from inside, Joy opened the door and walked toward the main entry gate. At that moment, three men - including a local individual identified as Tamim - forced their way into the house. The assailants shouted profanities before opening fire on Rana, striking his right leg, and fleeing the scene.
Rana directly accused Tamim, son of Sirajul Islam and a resident of the same locality, of firing the shot.
Relatives of the victim claimed that Tamim had been repeatedly demanding extortion money from Rana's elder brother's business enterprise. They suspect the shooting was carried out in retaliation after the family refused to yield to the extortion demands, adding that Tamim already faces a murder charge at Badda Police Station.
Family members rescued the injured victim and brought him to the DMCH Emergency Department at approximately 2:00 AM on Sunday (September 13). He is currently undergoing treatment in Ward 4 of the emergency unit.
Inspector in-charge of the DMCH police outpost confirmed that the gunshot victim is undergoing treatment in Ward 4, adding that the matter has been officially communicated to the concerned police station for necessary legal action.
