Kaptai Lake gates reopened as water level rises

The 16 spillway gates of Kaptai Lake in Rangamati were reopened on Friday morning as the water level rose, with each gate opened by six inches to drain excess water.
The gates were opened at 8:00 AM when the lake's water level reached 105.51 feet above mean sea level (MSL), according to the Kaptai Karnaphuli Hydropower Plant authorities.
The authorities said the water was being released as a precautionary measure to prevent houses from being submerged and erosion in different parts of Rangamati. The gates will be closed once the water level falls to 105 feet.
Earlier, the 16 gates were opened by six inches each on August 29 when the lake's water level reached 106.01 feet MSL. Around 9,000 cusecs of water was released at that time. The gates were later opened gradually, reaching three feet each at one point, releasing around 58,000 cusecs of water.
The gates were subsequently closed as the water level fell. They were reopened on Friday as the lake's water level rose again.
Kaptai Karnaphuli Hydropower Plant Manager Engineer Mahmud Hasan confirmed the matter, saying the gates were being operated based on the situation and would be closed when the water level stabilised at 105 feet.
