Uncertainty looms over coal extraction at Dinajpur’s Dighipara

Uncertainty continues over the official timeline for commercial coal extraction at the Dighipara Coal Field in Nawabganj upazila, Dinajpur, leaving local residents anxious over potential land acquisition and rehabilitation.

Speculation mounted after officials from the Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) recently inspected the area and placed boundary markers across proposed sites.

A deal was signed between the Bureau of Mineral Development (BMD) and BCMCL on October 21, 2015, to develop the Dighipara field. Studies indicate that the 24-square-kilometer basin holds reserves capable of producing 4 million tons of coal annually, sufficient to fuel a 4,000 MW power plant.

The Geological Survey of Bangladesh (GSB) first discovered coal in Dighipara in 1995. Subsequent feasibility studies confirmed substantial underground reserves across a 10 to 11-square-kilometer core basin suitable for underground mining methods.

Despite years of technical assessments, physical extraction has yet to begin. Local residents are demanding fair compensation, appropriate land valuation, and a clear rehabilitation plan before full-scale project execution commences.
