Fertiliser truck allegedly seized in Goalanda, later taken away by armed men

A truck carrying 15 sacks of government-supplied BCIC fertiliser was allegedly intercepted by local farmers in Goalanda upazila of Rajbari on Thursday morning, amid allegations that the fertiliser was being transported outside the district for sale.
The incident occurred around 7am in the Anandabazar area of Ujanchar Union. Local people said they detained the driver and a buyer along with the fertiliser and informed journalists and local administration officials.
Farmers in the area alleged that they often fail to obtain fertiliser from authorised dealers at government-fixed prices and are sometimes forced to buy it at higher prices from retailers. They claimed that fertiliser was regularly being transported to other areas from Mondal Traders, a dealer located at Shamsu Mondal's market.
According to the locals, efforts were made to have the truck released after it was intercepted. They said a man named Nazmul later arrived at the scene allegedly on behalf of the dealer and threatened those who had stopped the truck. Journalists present at the scene were also allegedly threatened. Locals claimed a locally made weapon fell to the ground and a revolver was visible at his waist during the incident. The truck was subsequently taken away from the scene.
Local residents alleged that Nazmul, son of Chan Mia of Bokartila in the Jamtala area, had previously been involved in local politics and criminal activities. They also alleged that Mondal Traders owner Masud Mondal was involved in Awami League politics. These allegations could not be independently verified.
Goalanda Upazila Agriculture Officer Syed Raihanul Haider said he had visited the scene and that authorities were investigating whether the fertiliser belonged to Masud Mondal's dealership. He said allegations of dealers illegally selling or diverting fertiliser would also be examined.
Goalanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer Saiful Huda said the matter was being taken seriously. He said selling government fertiliser outside the district would be an offence and that threatening journalists while attempting to remove the fertiliser would constitute another serious offence. He said Goalanda Ghat Police Station had been asked to look into the matter.
Police confirmation regarding the alleged use of weapons, the removal of the truck and whether any case or complaint has been filed was not immediately available.
