B'baria: Argument at dusk, 5-hour flashlight war at night

A minor afternoon argument over a football match spiraled into a fierce five-hour night clash using flashlights between residents of two Brahmanbaria villages, leaving at least 50 people injured.
The massive brawl broke out on Wednesday (September 9) night in Sarail upazila following a dispute between two teenagers earlier in the day.
Police officers, local public representatives, and political leaders worked for hours to halt the violence before finally regaining control around 11:00 PM.
Local sources said a local football match began at the Swalponoagaon Government Primary School ground at 4:30 PM.
Tensions flared when a teenager from Notun Habelipara allegedly assaulted a youth from Swalponoagaon during the game.
By 6:00 PM, villagers from both sides armed themselves and clashed openly in the dark, switching on flashlights to target rivals.
Upon receiving the news, police rushed to the scene alongside local politicians and UAZ representatives to quell the violence.
Sarail Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Jahangir Alam and Sarail Sadar Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Jabbar were among the 50 people injured by flying bricks.
Local BNP leader Anwar Master used a loudspeaker to appeal for calm as police struggled to disperse the rioters.
Sarail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Monjur Kader Bhuiyan confirmed the incident, adding that strict legal action will be taken against those involved.
