Writ dismissed, no NIDs without photo

The High Court has rejected a plea seeking national identity cards (NIDs) without photographs using biometric information.
A two-member HC court, led by the court of Justices Md Iqbal Kabir and SM Saiful Islam, issued this order on Wednesday (September 9).
From now on, photographs will be required to obtain NIDs.
Lawyer Kamal Hossain Miazi, representing the Election Commission, stated the development.
The writ petition was filed in 2022 by Sumaiya Ahmad Muna from Shahjahanpur, Dhaka. She claimed that she is a follower of the Islamic way of hijab and does not pose for photographs.
She asked an NID without any photographs, saying she failed to continue many services because she did not have one.
The High Court formulated the rule on March 6, 2022, to provide reasons for not issuing NIDs through biometrics rather than using pictures. The court is now rejected the rule.
During the hearing of the case, the state claimed that pictures were required for Hajj and opening bank accounts. It also claimed that biometric identification would require scanning of the iris, which would lead to uncovering the face.
