Indian traders submitted letters to the Bangladesh government requesting Hilsa exports for the upcoming Durga Puja festival.

The Fish Importers Association of India sent separate letters to the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Commerce Ministry.

Officials at the Commerce Ministry indicated that the request is being viewed positively, though the export volume remains undecided.

Commerce Secretary Ataur Rahman Khan confirmed receipt of the application and stated that final quantities will be determined in consultation with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. The Commerce Ministry is forwarding applications from 18 Bangladeshi firms to the fisheries ministry on Wednesday (September 9) for scrutiny.

Indian traders requested early export permissions this year, noting that limited, short-term approvals yield limited benefits. Regular Hilsa exports were suspended in 2012, but Bangladesh has granted special one-month permits during Durga Puja since September 2019.

Despite large approved quotas in recent years, actual exports have consistently fallen short. In 2025, Bangladesh approved 2,420 tonnes of Hilsa exports, but traders shipped only 577 tonnes. Last year, exports reached just 150 tonnes against an approved limit of 1,200 tonnes.
