Eiffel Tower shut by staff protest after female workers moved for religious visit

The Eiffel Tower has been temporarily closed after employees protested over the alleged sidelining of female staff during a private visit by a Hindu religious delegation.
The incident took place on Saturday when about 100 people linked to BAPS (Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha), a Hindu organisation, visited the monument according to Reuters.
“As the delegation passed through, women were asked to leave their workstations so that men could take their places,” Diane Davoine, a union representative, told Reuters.
Davoine said tensions grew over the weekend before employees held a meeting on Monday to discuss the incident.
The tower’s operator, SETE, acknowledged that the delegation had requested the visit be arranged to limit interactions with women, according to India Today.
SETE said such conditions should not have been accepted and pledged to investigate the incident.
Paris Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire said an investigation would be launched “as soon as possible”, Reuters reported.
France’s National Assembly President Yael Braun-Pivet criticised the reported treatment of the women, saying she would not accept female staff being told to step aside for foreign visitors.
The BAPS delegation was in France for events linked to the inauguration of a Hindu temple near Paris. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the temple’s inauguration on Sunday, according to India Today.
