The pressure to maintain a youthful appearance is nothing new in Hollywood. For actresses in particular, the competition to look beautiful, young and flawless on screen is becoming increasingly intense.
Amid this reality, Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence has spoken openly about her beauty routine and cosmetic procedures. She says facial expressions are one of her most important tools as an actress. So, she cannot take the risk of having too much Botox.
In a recent interview with Vogue magazine, Jennifer said she cannot undergo too many cosmetic procedures because she needs to maintain natural movement in her face for acting.
“I actually can’t do too much. I need movement in my face. I do baby Botox, but I can’t do too much. My skin might sag a little more than I’d like, but at least I’ll look bright and beautiful,” Jennifer said.
“Baby Botox” generally refers to using a smaller amount of Botox so that natural facial expressions are not completely lost. For Jennifer, maintaining natural facial movement is more important than completely erasing signs of ageing.
Her comments came at a time when Hollywood is debating how excessive cosmetic procedures can affect the natural facial expressions of actors and actresses.
Actress and director Olivia Wilde recently raised a similar issue. On the “The Run-Through with Vogue” programme, she said it has become difficult for directors to find actresses who can still show natural facial expressions.
Wilde said she has also faced pressure from the entertainment industry over age and beauty. Showing signs of ageing can invite criticism, while undergoing cosmetic procedures to remove those signs can also lead to questions. According to her, there is no easy way to win in such a situation.
However, Jennifer is not against all cosmetic procedures. In the interview, she said she has reservations about some treatments. She is particularly nervous about having a fat transfer.
She said she has no objection to others undergoing the procedure and would rather see the results to understand how it works. But she has not yet made a decision for herself.
Jennifer also jokingly spoke about another procedure she is interested in. She said she would like to have buccal fat removal, although she believes it would be very obvious if she underwent the procedure.
Jennifer said she has fairly prominent cheekbones and prefers radiofrequency-based treatments.
Alongside her candid comments about cosmetic procedures, Jennifer is also going through a busy period in her career. She was in the spotlight during last year’s awards season and received widespread praise for her performance in “Die My Love.”
The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and Jennifer received a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Actress in a Drama category.
Jennifer is also expected to return as Katniss Everdeen in the popular “The Hunger Games” franchise. She may appear in a small role in the prequel film “Sunrise on the Reaping,” which is scheduled for release in November.
Jennifer has another major project ahead. She will star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in legendary director Martin Scorsese’s “What Happens at Night.” The film is expected to be released next year.
Surprise, tears and anger are among the emotions Jennifer expresses through her facial movements on screen. Her facial expressions remain one of her greatest strengths as an actress. That is why she appears to be giving greater importance to preserving that strength than completely denying the signs of ageing.
