Bashundhara Kings face challenge to retain titles in new season

Bashundhara Kings are gearing up for the upcoming 2026-27 football season with a firm focus on retaining all their domestic trophies after clearing their initial licensing hurdles.
In a major relief for the country's football arena, FIFA lifted temporary bans on Abahani Limited, Bashundhara Kings, and Fakirerpool Young Men’s Club after the clubs settled their outstanding dues and cleared the initial licensing barrier.
Imagining the domestic league without Bashundhara Kings and Abahani would have been difficult, as both clubs have claimed six titles each since professional football debuted in 2007, demonstrating their immense dominance over Bangladesh football.
With off-pitch uncertainties cleared, player recruitment frenzy has gripped the clubs. Mohammedan SC began their preparations on a confident note by finalising a foreign head coach. Abahani delivered a major surprise by signing Nigerian World Cup forward Michael Babatunde.
A total of 13 teams will participate in the upcoming season; with analysts anticipating a highly competitive league as at least seven sides possess the strength to challenge for the championship.
Since making their top-flight debut in the 2018-19 season, Bashundhara Kings have transformed the country's football management culture while winning five consecutive league titles - an unprecedented feat in national football history. Their trophy cabinet currently holds 20 titles across male and female disciplines. The club earned a distinct place among young fans through professional standards, accountability, and strong organizational infrastructure.
Despite navigating recent operational challenges, the club's board maintained its steadfast commitment. Under the leadership of President Md Imrul Hasan and the continued support of Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, the team successfully overcame obstacles.
Beyond managing the team, the group established world-class sports infrastructure through Bashundhara Sports City, setting an unprecedented benchmark in South Asia.
Bashundhara Kings now aim to sweep all domestic trophies in the upcoming season. Although several national team players have departed, the return of Robson Robinho alongside a balanced mix of experienced local and foreign talent in a 35-member squad has boosted team morale.
Regular training sessions under an experienced local coaching panel are already underway as the Kings prepare to prove their mettle on the pitch once again.
