Cape Verde bus crash leaves 25 school children dead

At least 25 people, mostly children and teenagers, were killed after a school trip bus plunged into a deep ravine on Fogo Island in Cape Verde.

The tragedy occurred late Saturday night as the vehicle carried 32 passengers back to the city of São Filipe following an educational trip to Chã das Caldeiras village. Civl Defence chief of Fogo Island, José Canuto, confirmed the casualties to reporters, adding that several other children sustained severe injuries.

The bus driver organized the annual excursion at his own expense for local students, a tradition he carried out every year. He was also among those killed in the crash. Emergency workers laboured throughout the night to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage, which landed in a remote, rocky valley.

Seven victims were buried early Sunday morning. The remaining deceased were scheduled for burial later in the day, according to local broadcaster RCV. Road accidents of this magnitude are rare in the West African island nation, where road conditions and vehicle maintenance standards remain generally high.
