Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called on people to play a responsible role from their respective positions to ensure pollution-free rivers and a clean, liveable environment for future generations.

He made the call at a review meeting at the Secretariat on Sunday morning on controlling pollution in the rivers around Dhaka, removing waste, conservation and management, maintaining navigability and developing the circular waterways.

The meeting reviewed the overall activities concerning pollution control in the Buriganga, Turag, Dhaleshwari, Balu and Shitalakkhya rivers, as well as adjoining canals and drains. The discussion also covered measures to remove waste, ensure navigability and maintain the natural flow of water, and improve the existing circular waterways around Dhaka.

“Alongside ourselves, we must strive to leave pollution-free rivers and a liveable environment for the next generation. We cannot simply wait for government directives; we must also act out of a sense of personal responsibility,” the prime minister said.

He directed the authorities to take effective steps to quickly implement plans already adopted and stressed the need for proper coordination among the relevant ministries, divisions and agencies.
