Body of missing man at Cox’s Bazar jetty recovered after 18hrs

The body of a man who went missing after falling into the water while boarding a boat at Magnama Jetty in Pekua upazila of Cox’s Bazar was recovered nearly 18 hours later by a team of divers from Chattogram.

The body was recovered from the spot beneath the Magnama Jetty around 8:30 AM on Sunday (September 6). A five-member diving team from Chattogram began the rescue operation at 6AM.

Shamim was the son of Mosle Uddin, a resident of Bhola district. He was travelling from Chattogram city to his in-laws’ home in Kutubdia with his wife, Karima Begum.

According to local sources, Shamim and his wife Karima Begum had been waiting at Magnama Jetty around noon on Saturday (September 5) to travel to Kutubdia. When the boat arrived at the jetty at around 2:30 PM, they proceeded down the jetty stairs to board it. At that time, Shamim suddenly slipped and fell into the water. He had been missing since then.

Shafiul Alam, in-charge of Pekua Fire Service, said a team from the Fire Service and a team from the Bangladesh Navy began the rescue operation at 3pm on Saturday. The search continued until 12:30 AM, but Shamim could not be located as no diving team was available.

Later, at around 6am on Sunday, a five-member diving team from Chattogram arrived and resumed the rescue operation. Shamim’s body was recovered from beneath the jetty around 8:30 AM.

Pekua Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mehedi Hasan said the body of the missing man was recovered in the morning and handed over to his relatives.
