14kg of gold worth Tk25cr hidden in belt, airline worker detained

Customs officials have seized 120 gold bars weighing 13.92kg from the belt of Md Soeb Gazi, a technical helper of a Bangladesh Biman flight, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The seized gold is estimated to be worth around Tk 25 crore.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) disclosed the information in a statement on Saturday.

According to the statement, the gold bars were recovered from Bangladesh Biman flight BG-148, which arrived on the Dubai-Chattogram-Dhaka route in the morning. Md Soeb Gazi, an assistant technical helper of Bangladesh Biman, was detained in connection with the incident.

Acting on a tip-off, Customs learned around 11:30am that gold might be smuggled through the flight. Customs House officials and a preventive team subsequently went to the airport and launched a special search inside the aircraft.

Members of Biman’s mechanical and cleaning teams were being searched while leaving the aircraft after completing cleaning work. At one stage, with the assistance of security officer Nur Islam, officials spotted several objects wrapped in black Scotch tape inside Soeb Gazi’s belt.

The objects were later taken to the Customs Hall, where an inventory was conducted in the presence of representatives from various agencies. The inventory revealed 120 gold bars, each weighing 116 grams.

The NBR suspected that the gold bars were carefully concealed and being taken out of the airport for smuggling. Customs believes the attempt was made to evade the government-prescribed duties and taxes.

Members of AVSEC, Customs Intelligence and various intelligence agencies were present during the operation. Customs said the consignment was seized through a joint effort by Dhaka Customs House and different intelligence agencies.

The seized gold bars have been deposited in the airport Customs’ warehouse for valuable goods.
