Dhaka's air quality still 'unhealthy'

Dhaka ranked 11th among the most polluted cities globally on Thursday (September 3), recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 105.

Air pollution levels continue to rise across major global cities, driven by climate change, rapid urbanization, and ongoing construction activities.

According to data from Swiss air quality technology company IQAir, Kuching in Malaysia topped the list of most polluted cities with a "very unhealthy" AQI score of 273.

Meanwhile, Dhaka recorded an AQI score of 105, categorized as "unhealthy for sensitive groups." This level poses health risks to children, the elderly, and individuals suffering from respiratory illnesses.

Kampala, the capital of Uganda, ranked second with an AQI score of 160, which is classified as "unhealthy." Jakarta, Indonesia, ranked third with an identical score of 160. Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Hanoi in Vietnam, and Chengdu in China also featured near the top of the pollution index.

According to IQAir benchmarks, an AQI score between zero and 50 represents "good" air quality. A score from 51 to 100 indicates "moderate" air quality. Scores between 101 and 150 are classified as "unhealthy for sensitive groups," while readings between 151 and 200 are deemed "unhealthy."

AQI scores between 201 and 300 are marked as "very unhealthy," and any score exceeding 301 is classified as "hazardous."
