Following a remarkable 20 years’ career, former Barcelona star and current Paris Saint Germain forward, Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from the national team of Argentina.
As reported in the Argentinean media outlets, the 27-year-old defender Cristian Romero has been picked up as the most likely candidate for the captaincy. Prior to Messi, he used to be the third-choice captain after Messi and veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi.
Romero has recently moved from Tottenham Hotspur to Atlético Madrid. He is admired by his teammates owing to his defending abilities, fighting spirit and leadership skills.
Romero will need to step up and lead Argentina’s defense without Messi in order to maintain their winning streak.
