36 were victims of violation last month, out of 54, says Mahila Parishad

At least 252 women and girls were subjected to the violence across the country in August, according to a report by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad.

Of those, 55 were killed and 54 were raped.

The rights organisation said 36 of the 54 rape victims were girls, highlighting the disproportionate vulnerability of children to sexual violence.

The organisation released the data in a statement on Tuesday, based on reports published in 15 national dailies and two online news outlets monitored by the organisation’s Central Legal Aid Sub-Council.

Of the 252 victims, 118 were girls and 134 were women. Among them, 55 were killed - including 10 girls and 45 women.

Of the 54 rape victims, 36 were girls and 18 were women. Thirteen victims, including eight girls, were gang-raped. Two victims, including one girl, were killed after being raped.

The report also recorded 14 attempted rape cases, involving 11 girls.

In August, 30 women and girls, including 24 girls, were subjected to sexual violence. Fourteen victims, including 12 girls, faced sexual harassment or assault, while nine, including eight girls, were subjected to stalking or harassment.

Seven victims, including four girls, faced cyber violence, according to the report.

Women and girls were also subjected to attempted murder, burning, suicide, domestic worker abuse, domestic violence, child marriage and abduction, among other forms of violence during the month.

The organisation said its figures were compiled from media reports and may not represent the full scale of violence against women and girls in the country.
