Cyclone may form in Bay by November

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast the formation of four to six low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal by November, with one potentially developing into a cyclone.

In its three-month forecast issued on Tuesday, the BMD said the country may receive below-normal rainfall between September and November, while both daytime and nighttime temperatures could remain above normal.

Of the four to six low-pressure systems expected to form over the Bay, one or two may intensify into depressions, with one potentially developing into a cyclone, the forecast said.

The country may also experience thunderstorms on six to 10 days during the period.

Meanwhile, three to five mild to moderate heatwaves may sweep across the country. Mild heatwaves are defined by temperatures ranging from 36°C to 37.9°C, while moderate heatwaves range from 38°C to 39.9°C.

The BMD also said nationwide rainfall in August was 5.7 per cent below normal. Chittagong and Mymensingh divisions received above-normal rainfall, while rainfall remained normal in Sylhet and Barishal divisions and below normal in the remaining divisions.
