Trivedi declines to comment on Bangladesh’s internal political issues

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has declined to comment on Bangladesh’s internal political issues, saying the country’s people and its elected government with a majority mandate are best placed to determine what is in the nation’s interest.

He made the remarks on Tuesday while responding to media after paying a courtesy call on LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan.

Asked about India’s relations with the current Bangladesh government and tensions between the two countries surrounding former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Trivedi said, ''Look, I am an ambassador. We do not want to comment on internal politics, nor should we. The people of the country and its elected government with a majority mandate know best what is good for the people. That is what matters.”

''As representatives, we always want the same thing-- people-to-people relations. If I am not here and someone else takes my place, they would want the same thing. Your representative in Delhi also wants the same thing: to strengthen people-to-people relations.''
