The final whistle: Messi closes the chapter on Argentina

Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an emotional end to a remarkable Argentina career that spanned more than two decades, 207 appearances and some of the most unforgettable moments in the country’s football history.

The 39-year-old made his Argentina debut in 2005 and went on to win the 2022 World Cup and two Copa América titles. He also finished as a World Cup runner-up in 2014 and again this summer, with his final appearance coming in the World Cup final.

“This was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep down, but I understand that the time has come,” Messi said in a statement. “I always gave it my all. I always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.”

For Messi, however, the decision was not made overnight. He revealed that he had written his retirement announcement on July 21, just two days after the World Cup final. The death of his father, Jorge, earlier in August then strengthened his belief that it was time to close the chapter.

After his father’s death, Messi had admitted that he was uncertain about how much longer he could continue playing for Argentina. He also opened up about the physical toll of the World Cup final, saying he had tried to push beyond his limits but could no longer continue.

“Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply,” Messi said. “I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the national team. I’ve given everything I had; I have nothing left to give.”

Messi leaves behind a legacy few footballers could ever match. From the heartbreak of earlier years to finally lifting the World Cup in 2022, his journey with Argentina was filled with tears, pressure, triumph and redemption.

Now, the captain who carried Argentina through generations is stepping away, believing the time has come for the next generation to take his place.

“There are some great young players coming up who deserve to be here,” Messi said.

Messi will continue his club career with Inter Miami, where his contract runs until 2028. But for Argentina, the era of Lionel Messi has reached its final whistle.
