Bangladesh national team midfielder Shamit Som has begun a new chapter in his professional career after joining the historic New York Cosmos.

However, his debut for the club ended prematurely after he was forced to leave the field in the 74th minute with a minor injury.

No official medical details have yet been released regarding the nature or severity of the injury. The uncertainty has sparked concern among Bangladesh football fans, particularly with the national team facing an important schedule ahead.

Born in Edmonton, Canada, to Bangladeshi parents, Shamit has built considerable professional experience in North American football. He spent four seasons with Montreal Impact in Major League Soccer before joining Cavaliers FC in the Canadian Premier League, where he played 62 league matches before moving to the Cosmos.

While Shamit’s club career has largely developed in North America, his international journey has taken a more unusual path. Before representing Bangladesh, he progressed through various age-group levels of the Canadian national team. He also made two appearances for Canada’s senior side after making his debut in 2020.

His Bangladeshi heritage later opened the door to international football with Bangladesh. After receiving clearance from FIFA, Shamit made his debut for the Bangladesh national team in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers in June 2025. He quickly established himself as an important presence in the national team’s midfield.

Shamit joined the New York Cosmos with nearly a decade of professional football experience. For him, becoming part of a new era at a club associated with legendary figures such as Pelé represents another significant milestone in his career.

However, his first appearance for the Cosmos has now raised concerns. Being forced off in the 74th minute means his immediate fitness status will be closely monitored.
