Dhk-Ctg highway sees 92pc drop in traffic violations

Traffic violation cases dropped by 92.33 per cent within ten days of introducing AI-powered auto-fine system on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
Officials noted that artificial intelligence camera surveillance successfully restored discipline and enhanced safety across the key transport route.
Highway Police launched the AI camera system on August 18 to enforce traffic rules through automated, transparent technology. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed inaugurated the project at Meghna in Narayanganj.
On the first day, the system automatically generated 446 violation cases. The number fell sharply to 42 on the second day and reached just 34 on the tenth day.
Drivers welcomed the initiative but stressed that technology alone cannot guarantee complete road safety.
They urged authorities to improve road infrastructure, regulate pedestrian movement, clear slow-moving battery-driven rickshaws, and warn drivers entering from feeder roads.
Highway Police data showed 695 automated cases were filed between August 18 and Thursday. Speeding accounted for 658 cases, while 37 involved driving on the wrong side.
On day one, 417 cases were recorded for speeding and 29 for wrong-side driving. The following day saw a 90.58 per cent drop, with 42 speeding cases and zero wrong-side violations.
Subsequent days recorded 21 cases on August 20, 21 on August 21, 42 on August 22, 35 on August 23, 21 on August 24, and 14 on August 25. Wrong-side driving violations dropped to zero last Wednesday and Thursday.
"It is impossible to deploy police at every point," said Highway Police officials. "Drivers previously followed rules only when police were visible. AI cameras have created a permanent habit of compliance."
Officials added that influential vehicle owners previously attempted to intervene during manual ticketing. However, as ticketing has become automated, All are forced to abide by the traffic law.
