Farakka gates open, no flood risk: GM

A total of 109 gates of the Farakka Barrage are now open, but officials have clarified that there is no flood danger as such at Farakka.

Farakka Barrage General Manager R.D. Deshpande stated Sunday (August 30) that the floods in Nepal recently have not made any notable difference to Farakka. The level of water upstream and downstream of the Barrage is the same and opening of gates has been done as usual.

According to reports, a glacial episode in Tibet led to 350,000 cusecs of water, mud and rocks going through Nepal’s Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, leading to a flood. These floods finally reached the Gandak river from where they flowed through the Ganges to Sonpur in Bihar.
