HC verdict on child Asiya rape, murder case today

The High Court is expected to pronounce its verdict on Monday regarding death reference and appeal of Hitu Sheikh, who is the main accused in the murder and rape case of eight-year-old Asiya in Magura.


According to the case statement, Asiya was brutally raped and assaulted by Hitu Sheikh, her sister’s father-in-law, when she went to visit her sister's house in Magura during Ramadan vacation on March 5. Later she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.

Asiya’s mother filed the case against Hitu and other three persons. Rapid trial was conducted, which led to death punishment for Hitu, 47, along with fine of Tk 100,000 on May 17 last year. Other three accused were declared not guilty.

According to law, death punishment must be confirmed by High Court. Case file was forwarded to High Court on May 21 last year and later paper book was made for hearing.
