E-rickshaws barred from Dhaka’s main roads: Shahe Alam

Battery-powered rickshaws, or e-rickshaws, will no longer be allowed to operate on Dhaka’s main roads, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam has said.

He said arrangements would instead be made for e-rickshaws to operate on internal roads in eight zones of the capital.

The state minister made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a meeting between Local Government Minister Abdul Moin Khan and Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Mohammad Shuhda Bin Osman at the Secretariat on Sunday.

Regarding the operation and registration of e-rickshaws, Shahe Alam said the eight zones would be divided into three categories under the proposed arrangements.

He said only two- and four-passenger e-rickshaws would be eligible for registration in Dhaka, while six-passenger vehicles would not be brought under the registration system of the city corporations.

However, two-, four- and six-passenger e-rickshaws would be eligible for registration for operation on rural roads and in district towns, he added.

Shahe Alam said the government was in the final stages of preparing a new policy to regulate e-rickshaws. The policy would soon be sent to the Law Ministry for vetting and could be issued within the next one or two weeks.

Once implemented, the policy would bring e-rickshaws and electric rickshaws under a specific regulatory framework across the country, including in the capital, he said.
