Iran executes 20 Afghan nationals so far this year

Iran has executed at least 20 Afghan nationals in various prisons across the country since the beginning of 2026, according to Iran-based human rights organizations.
The rights groups said at least one Afghan national has been executed in Iran on average every month this year. Several other Afghan nationals are currently awaiting execution.
According to human rights organizations, most of the Afghan defendants were not given the opportunity to have legal representation. In many cases, their families were not informed in advance about the judicial proceedings or the execution.
The executions were carried out over charges including murder and drug-related offenses, as well as allegations of conspiring on behalf of Israel and participating in anti-government protests. Most of the executions reportedly took place in prisons in the Iranian cities of Shiraz, Yazd and Isfahan.
The organizations also said it is difficult to determine the exact number of Afghan nationals executed because authorities sometimes carry out the executions secretly without making any official announcement.
In 2025, at least 85 Afghan nationals were reportedly executed in Iran.
Although Iran regularly carries out executions of its own citizens as well, anger has grown over what critics describe as the lack of visible action by Afghanistan's Taliban government to help Afghan nationals facing the death penalty in Iran.
