Bangladeshi killed in BSF firing at Habiganj border

A Bangladeshi man was killed in firing by India's Border Security Force (BSF) near the Chimtibil border in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as 21-year-old Sohag Mia, son of Shafiqul Islam of the Chimtibil area.

The incident occurred at around 12:30 PM, according to local residents and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials.

Lt Col Tanzilur Rahman, commanding officer of BGB's Habiganj 55 Battalion, said the incident took place about one kilometre inside Indian territory from the zero line.

He said the BSF opened fire after identifying cattle smugglers, leaving Sohag dead. His body was handed over to police and would be released to his family after completion of legal procedures.

However, Sohag's uncle Abdul Kadir claimed that he had taken cattle to the border to graze when BSF personnel opened fire, suspecting him of being involved in cattle smuggling.

Residents said they heard gunshots from the border area and later learned that a man was lying on the ground. Sohag's family subsequently identified him.

He was taken to Chunarughat Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

Police later conducted an inquest of the body at the hospital.
