Young man found hanging over theft allegations in Sunamganj

A young man found hanging after being accused of theft at Berajali village in Gaurarang Union of Sunamganj Sadar Upazila on Saturday (August 29) morning.
The dead is Emran,23, son of Abdul Hasim of the village. His body was found hanging by a rope from a bamboo beam on the veranda of his house.
Emran’s younger brother Tuhin Hossain said over phone that about 15 days ago, a water pump motor and some electrical wires belonging to local resident Chan Mia were stolen from Berajali Bazar. Later, Chan Mia’s son Abul Fazal informed them about the incident. Abul Fazal subsequently accused Emran Hossain and another young man from the same village, Nilu Mia, of stealing the motor. The issue was discussed at an arbitration meeting at the office of Gaurarang Union Parishad Chairman Md Shaukat Ali at Berajali Bazar on Friday night.
Emran’s father, Abdul Hasim, alleged that the people presented as witnesses at the arbitration said they knew nothing about the theft. However, the chairman and Chan Mia jointly blamed his son for the theft. When his wife, Sahara Begum, tried to speak, the chairman allegedly threatened them and attempted to assault them. The arbitration meeting then instructed them to return the stolen motor by Monday, failing which they would be handed over to police on theft charges.
Union Parishad Chairman Md Shaukat Ali denied threatening Emran or any member of his family during the arbitration. He said there was a family dispute among their relatives over financial transactions and that Emran was heavily in debt. He said the family was scheduled to meet on Monday to discuss the dispute. They were only told that if the motor was found in the meantime, it should be brought to the meeting. “Nothing more than that was said,” he added.
Sadar Model Police Station OC Ratan Sheikh confirmed the recovery of the body and said, “I am at the scene. We are looking into the matter.” and the body and sent it to the district headquarters hospital for autopsy.
