New container terminal construction in Patenga to begim today

The foundation stone for the Laldia Container Terminal, being constructed in Patenga to expand the capacity of Chattogram Port, will be laid today.

Shipping, Road Transport and Bridges, and Railways Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam will lay the foundation stone as the chief guest at a ceremony at the Laldia project site at 11:00 AM on Sunday (August 30).

According to a press release, construction of the Laldia Container Terminal is beginning with support from Denmark. The project is being implemented to increase and modernise Chattogram Port’s capacity and boost the country’s foreign trade.

A significant portion of Bangladesh’s import and export trade is handled through Chattogram Port. As the volume of foreign trade increases, so does the need to expand the port’s container-handling capacity, speed up vessel and cargo management, and ensure services that meet international standards.

The press release said construction of the Laldia Container Terminal would reduce pressure on Chattogram Port’s existing infrastructure while increasing its container transportation and handling capacity. The terminal is planned to be operated using modern infrastructure and technology-driven management systems.

Once the new terminal becomes operational, Chattogram Port’s operations are expected to become more efficient and dynamic. It will also help reduce the time required to transport import and export goods, enhance logistics management capacity, and strengthen Bangladesh’s competitive position in international trade.

The Ministry of Shipping considers the Laldia Container Terminal an important part of the ongoing initiative to modernise the country’s port infrastructure.

Representatives from various ministries, Chattogram Port Authority, relevant local and foreign organisations, business leaders and media personnel are expected to attend the foundation stone-laying ceremony.
