The country’s power shortage is expected to ease significantly by next summer as the government aims to develop at least 3,000 megawatts of solar power generation capacity before the peak season, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit said on Saturday.

He said the government is providing various incentives and facilities to entrepreneurs to expand solar power generation. The initiatives are expected to help create the additional generation capacity ahead of next summer.

The state minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at an exchange meeting with headteachers, education officials and chairpersons of school governing bodies at the Jashore PTI auditorium on Saturday. The meeting, organised by the district administration, focused on improving the quality and ethical standards of education and ensuring cleanliness in educational institutions.

Commenting on rising fuel prices, Amit said global energy prices were increasing and questioned how long a country like Bangladesh could avoid adjusting domestic fuel prices. He said the government was still making adjustments while keeping public interest in mind and urged people to develop moderation in the use of resources.

Addressing teachers, the state minister stressed the importance of building a foundation of moral education from the primary level. He also called for proper sanitation and cleanliness at educational institutions and regular discussions with parents to prevent child marriage.

Amit said no student would have to discontinue education due to financial hardship, adding that the government would take responsibility for students facing financial difficulties.

He also warned members of his own party against using political identities to exert influence or create disorder at educational institutions. Anyone involved in such activities would first face organisational action and subsequently legal measures, he said.

The meeting was chaired by Jashore Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashiq Hasan. District Council Administrator Delwar Hossain Khokon attended as a special guest.
