50-Km tailback grips Dhaka-Ctg highway

A 50-kilometre-long traffic jam has brought traffic to a standstill on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, causing severe suffering for thousands of passengers and motorists.
The congestion has stretched from Chandina in Cumilla to the Ashariarchar Bridge in Narayanganj along the Dhaka-bound lane.

The tailback began around noon on Friday and continued until Saturday morning.
According to officials, the congestion was triggered by repair work on the Ashariarchar Bridge. Traffic on the Dhaka-bound side of the highway has slowed to a near standstill, leaving thousands of vehicles stranded.
The Roads and Highways Department said a large pothole had developed on a section of the Dhaka-bound lane of the bridge. As the pothole continued to widen, posing a risk of accidents, repair work began around 11AM on Friday.
During the repair work, one of the two lanes was closed, while vehicles were allowed to pass through the remaining lane. As traffic volume gradually increased, the situation deteriorated into a massive tailback.
The situation worsened on Saturday as an overwhelming number of vehicles attempted to pass through the single operational lane. The congestion eventually spread as far as Chandina in Cumilla.
Yahya, a driver of a Star Line bus stranded in the traffic jam, said he had been stuck since midnight on Friday. “The passengers are suffering immensely."
Humayun Azad, a driver of Saint Martin Paribahan, said the traffic jam stretched for around 50 kilometres from Chandina in Cumilla to Narayanganj.
Daudkandi Highway Police Station OC Prem Das Ray said the main reason for the congestion between Daudkandi and the Meghna Toll Plaza was the road repair work near the Ashariarchar Bridge.
