Potato farmers and traders blocked a major highway on Thursday (August 27) afternoon demanding the cold storage potato preservation rent be fixed at Tk 5 per kg.

Protesters staged the demonstration on the Rangpur-Lalmonirhat-Kurigram highway at Nabadiganj in Rangpur city.

Farmers warned that if their demand is not met by Saturday, they will enter all cold storages in Rangpur on Sunday and retrieve their potatoes by paying Tk 5 per kg themselves.

Earlier, hundreds of potato growers and traders from various parts of Rangpur assembled in the Nabadiganj area. They blocked the highway by placing logs, halting traffic on both sides of the road.

Speaking at the rally, farmer leaders pointed out that the Department of Agricultural Extension reported a preservation cost of Tk 3.43 per kg for cold storage. However, cold storage owners declared they would not release potatoes for less than Tk 7 per kg.

The leaders stated that if their demands are ignored by Saturday, they will manually retrieve the potatoes from the facilities. They added that authorities must take responsibility if the law and order situation deteriorates as a result.

The protesters lifted the road blockade after two hours.
