A Dhaka court on Thursday issued a travel ban against former Director General (DG) of Novotheatre Arshad Ullah and his wife Rebecca Akhtar amid an investigation into illegal assets and money laundering to Canada.
Dhaka Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir passed the order following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to the ACC petition, an inquiry is underway against Arshad Ullah over allegations of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income and laundering money to Canada. The anti-graft watchdog has formed an inquiry team to investigate the charges.
The petition stated that the commission apprehended Arshad Ullah and his wife Rebecca Akhtar might attempt to flee the country. Their departure abroad would hamper a fair and smooth investigation into the allegations.
Consequently, the ACC requested a travel ban preventing them from leaving the country until the inquiry concludes.
Following the hearing, the court granted the ACC's petition and ordered the travel restriction on both individuals.
