Nazrul remembered on 50th death anniversary

The 50th death anniversary of Bangladesh’s National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam is being observed today, August 27.

Known for his poetry of rebellion, humanity and equality, Nazrul died on August 27, 1976, at the then PG Hospital, now Bangladesh Medical University, in Dhaka. Various institutions, including the Nazrul Institute, Nazrul Academy and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, have organized programmes to mark the occasion.

Nazrul, born in Churulia of West Bengal in 1899, belonged to poor background but rose to be one of the most important personalities in the history of Bengali literature. Nazrul's poetry and songs made people struggle against exploitation and injustice.

Nazrul and his family were brought to Bangladesh after the liberation of the country on May 24, 1972. He was declared the National Poet of Bangladesh.

Nazrul was awarded an honorary D.Litt degree by Dhaka University in 1974 and Bangladeshi citizenship in 1976.

Two-day event organized by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will include discussion sessions, singing and dancing performances.

Three-day program of Nazrul Academy will comprise homage ceremonies at his tomb, milad mahfil, discussion sessions and cultural programs.
